What would South Florida be like without air conditioning? Hot is probably an understatement, and sticky probably belongs in the description too. If you’re a homeowner in this part of the world, you probably want to do everything you can to guarantee your air conditioning keeps working without fail. Here are four ways that you can ensure dependable performance from your machine.

Find a reputable air conditioning service company

The first step in making sure you won’t ever face an unwelcome air conditioning problem is to find a company that will quickly step in any time you do, or to prevent it. There are air conditioning service companies throughout the yellow pages, but they aren’t all created equal. Be sure you do your research and find one that is responsive, experienced, and that has a solid reputation within the community.

Schedule regular inspections

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. At least that’s how the old saying goes, and it couldn’t be more true than with air conditioners. When you have a technician come out to your home a couple of times each year—perhaps the spring and fall— to check over the system and address any minor issues that you might see, you’ll be glad for that ounce of prevention which may keep machine malfunction away forever.

Use air conditioning reasonably

On hot summer days, it’s easy to think setting your thermostat to near-refrigerator temps is the answer. Sure, it might be incredibly comfortable on the inside of your home, but those low temps are also taxing your machine. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends keeping your thermostat set on 78 so that you’re efficiently using a power source. A silver lining is that you won’t be asking your machine to do more than it should.

Address problems quickly

If your ac unit seems to be lagging, if the machine struggles to keep the temperature you’ve set, or if the unit is making noises it normally doesn’t, it might be time to call in the pros for a check. Oftentimes small problems can be easily addressed before they turn into much bigger and more expensive problems. At the first sign of trouble, it’s best to call in the pros.
